Coal-cutting machines.-In a coal-cutting machine with a haulage drum capable of being driven at high or low speed, ratchet mechanism effects the slow drive while the fast drive is effected through chain gearing. The machine shown is provided with a cutter bar B, gear box C and cuttings-removing means as described in Specification 129,066. The gear-box C is reversibly carried by the main frame and is vertically adjustable thereon by means of screws O operated by worm gearing H; the cutter bar is driven by the motor S through flexible shaft R and universal joints Q. The shaft of the haulage drum T is driven either through chain gearing U<1> controlled by a clutch U, or through ratchet gearing comprising a cam-operated lever V<1>, Fig. 6, having a depending pawl engaging a ratchetwheel W on the drum shaft; the ratchet gearing may be thrown out of operation by a hand-lever W<1>, which is then locked by a lever V<2>. The drum T is driven from its shaft through an intermediate pinion carried by a stationary plate. The machine is pivotally carried by a base-plate A which is tilted by an angle-iron at its rear edge. When the haulage drum is turning the machine on its pivot for cutting in, the haulage rope is guided by rollers T<2>, which may be moved laterally when not in use.
