Coal-cutting machines.-A coalcutting machine comprises a supporting frame carrying a transversely swingable kerf cutter and a second kerf cutter swing- able in a plane at an angle to the transverse plane, and preferably in a vertical plane, the cutters having separate driving and feeding means and being operable simultaneously. As shown, a carriage 1 carries at the centre of its front end a cutter-chain jib 32 pivoted on a horizontal shaft 23, and has guides 5 in which brackets 7 are movable by screws 6, the brackets 7 supporting a ring 8 on which is rotatably mounted a turntable 9 rigidly carrying a horizontal cutter-chain jib 20. A motor 4 on the truck 1 is adapted at will to drive the truck at high or low speed, to drive the screws 6 to raise or lower the horizontal cutter-jib 20, and, through a shaft 26, bevel gears, a clutch and the shaft 23, to drive the cutter-chain on the jib 32. The shaft 23 also carries an eccentric 47<1> which oscillates a member 45 pivoted on a nut 40, the member 45 carrying opposed pawls adapted to engage opposed ratchet wheels on the nut to rotate the latter on a screw 38 pivoted at 39, the cutter-jib 32 being thereby raised or lowered; an adjustable shield plate holds either or both pawls out of action as desired. Beneath the turntable 9 is a motor 10 by which the cutterchain on the jib 20 is driven, and which may also drive a drum 11 through gearing and a friction clutch controlled by a hand-wheel 15; the drum winds in a rope 12 passing round guides 13 to a fixed point, and thereby rotates the turntable and cutter-jib to make an arc wall cut. The turntable 9 may be locked by a bolt engaging one of a series of notches.
