A machine for sawing a pipe by means of a rotary tool, such as a saw 33 or a grinding wheel, has a main shaft 22 driven by worm gearing 16, 21 from a motor 10 and the shaft, at one end, drives the tool 33 through reduction gearing 35, 34 and, at the other end, drives traversing wheels 53 through epicyclic or eccentric reduction gearing 40, 45; the machine is secured on the pipe by linkage comprising tensioning means 62a, rollers 62, and a quickrelease hook 65 with turnbuckle adjustment 64 and is driven slowly round the pipe during cutting by engagement of the traversing wheels 53 with the pipe circumference or the edge of a peripheral flange. For adjustment of the depth of cut without interrupting the drive to the saw, the saw spindle 32 is mounted on a ring 26 adjustable round the shaft 22 by worm gearing 27, 28. The epicyclic gearing comprises a twin pinion 40 rotatably mounted on a bush 37 on an eccentric boss 36 of the main shaft and one set of teeth 41 mesh with a fixed toothed ring 44 while the other set 42 mesh with a toothed annulus 45 connected by gearing at 48 to the axle of the traversing wheels; the annulus 45 is journalled on the main shaft and on a bearing bush 46 on the gearbox 11 and is enclosed by a removable cap 47. Spur reduction gearing is provided in the ring 12 between the motor and gearbox and the machine may be manually " inched " by a spanner fitted on the end 17 of the worm shaft. Non-driven rollers 58 on separate axles 57 may be fitted in appropriate holes 56 of a set of holes provided in side plates 55.
