Abstract

844,034. Grinding, trueing grinding wheels. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. Jan. 22, 1959 [March 3, 1958], No. 2389/59. Class 60. A grinding machine, particularly for grinding gear teeth, comprises a grinding wheel 26 mounted on an adjustable column 14, a slide 80 which carries trueing means 82 for the grinding wheel and is movably mounted on the column, and a screw 72 having separate nuts 68, 98 engaged thereon, the screw and nut 68 constituting means for adjusting the column 'and the screw and nut 98 means for adjusting the slide 80 on the column. The grinding wheel 26 and driving motor 32 therefor are mounted for lateral adjustment on a table 16 carried at the top of the column 14 which is movable vertically in a hollow frame portion 12. The compound screw 72 is held for rotation, cut against endwise movement in the table 16 and with the screw threaded portions 74, 76, which respectively engage the nuts 68, 98, of opposite hand. The nut 68 is mounted for rotation in a housing 48 secured to the frame portion 12 and has an outer gear portion 70 meshing with a gear wheel 62 arranged to be driven through irreversible worm gearing 54, 60 from a handoperated shaft 52. The nut 98 is non-rotatably in the slide 80, and a worm gear 86 fixed to the shaft 72 above the nut meshes with a worm 88 on a hand-operated shaft 90 extending outwardly of the column. Rotation of the shaft 52 rotates the nut 68 and so raises or lowers the column and associated mechanism. Rotation of the shaft 90 rotates the shaft 72 in the thenstationary nut 68 and therefore raises the column together with the associated mechanism; the rotating shaft also causes the independent movement of the slide 80, upward movement of the column being accompanied by an equal upward movement of the slide on the column to compensate for trueing. The trueing tool 82 may consist of a pivotally-mounted diamond and be controlled by a template.
