656,872. Mixing machines. AITKEN, I. M. E., COLQUHOUN, C. B. H., and WATSON, W. R. Aug. 16, 1947, No. 27087/46. [Class 86] A mixing machine, especially for mixing powders, comprises a drum rotated about a horizontal axis and an internal blade structure or rotor which is adapted to be rotated either with the drum or in the opposite direction, by means of variable gear transmission, means being provided for swinging the drum in a vertical plane for filling and emptying it. As shown, the drum A is fixed to a hollow shaft C rotatably mounted in a casing W carrying a frame structure supporting an electric motor F from which the shaft C is driven through a belt S and pulley E. The mixing rotor H comprises helical blades mounted on a spindle I, one end of which passes through the hollow shaft C and has a spur wheel L which forms the central pinion of a sun-and-planet gear. The planet pinions M are mounted in a flanged, rotatable disc O and mesh with teeth cut in a cylindrical flange of the pulley E. The disc O has a peripheral groove for a brake band P controlled by a bell crank lever Q.. Initially the drum A is rotated and carries the rotor H with it. When the brake band P is gradually tightened the rotor is first brought to rest and then rotates in the opposite direction. The drum A is rotatable in a vertical plane about trunnions R to facilitate its being filled or emptied.
