rIhis invention relates to a hoisting apparatus Which is primarily designed for caisson work. The invention is designed to enlarge the scope and usefulness of such machine especially when used for excavating in connection with a caisson.
The invention concerns itself more directly with the incorporation of a winchor nigger-head in a hoisting apparatus involving a drum. The relation of the parts are so designed that the niggerhead will rotate slower than the cable drum. In addition the driving mechanism is so arranged that the cable drum or niggerh'ead may be optionally driven at will.
The invention comprises the novel structure and combinations of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out and defined in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred form of this invention and in which similar reference numerals refer to similar features in the different views:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a hoisting apparatus involving this invention.
Figure 2 is an end elevational View of the hoisting apparatus.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view upon an enlarged scale of the hoisting drum and operating mechanism therefor showing parts in elevation.

In connection with this invention, there is shown a pulley standard consisting of a plurality of legs 1 connected by a top member 2. These legs converge upwardly and they are suitably braced and transversely connected to provide a rigid standard for supporting the cable pulleys which are represented by the reference numerals 3 and 4. Upon one side of the standard there is arranged a platform 5 which is supported upon one end upon a transverse member of the standard. The shaft 12 has a pinion 13 at its far end which drives a pinion 14 which is rieidl secured uaon a shaft 15V-3 which is journalled in the end plates 16v of a drum 17. @ne end of the drum 17is journalled upon the motor 9 while the other end thereof is supported by a shaft 18 which is integral with the end plate 16 and which is 1 suitably journalled in a bearing bracket 19 which ext-ends from a transverse member 2O on the platform. Also journalled in the bearing bracket 19 is the hub 21 of an internal gear 22Y which is in meshing. relation y with a pinion 23 upon the shaft 15. A brake 24@ surrounds the internal gear 22 and a similar brake 25 surrounds the other end of the drum 17. The foregoing described structure is a well known hoisting machine andconstitutes no part of this invention except in so far as it cooperates therewith. i
According to. this invention7 a caisson winch or yniggerhead 26 is incorporated in the aforedescribed structure as follows: The niggerheadf26 isl provided with a shaft 27 which is journalled in a bearing 28 at the top of the standard 29 rising from the platform. A ratchet wheel 30 is secured upon the shaft 27 and is engaged by a pawlv 31- which `is supported by a suitable bearing 32 rising vfrom one ofthe standards 29 and a second standard 33. A hub 34 is keyed upon the inner end of the shaft 27 and this hub is bolted or suitably secured tothe hub C 21-of the internal gear 22.
A cable 35 is wound around the drum 17 and extends over the pulley 4 upon the standard and a cable 36 is wound around the niggerhead 26 and extends around the pulley or sheave 8. With this construction it is possible to use the cable drum 17 for hoisting purposes whenever it is desirable and the niggerhead 26Qmay be used in connection with hoisting material which is-1V CII - 37 as shown in Figure 4. A small shaft 38 upon the swivel block is provided with an arm 39 which is connected to a link 40. The remote end of the link 40 is connected to an arm 41 on a small shaft 42 which is" operated by a hand lever 43. One of the brakes is adapted for holding the friction drum 17 'against rotation. The other friction brake is adapted for holding` the internal gear against rotation.
In the operation of this machine, the bra-ke 25 will be released and the brake 24 Will be applied When it is desired to rotate the friction drum 17, then when the motor 9 is started the gear 10 Will rotate and cause the gear Wheel 11 to rotate in a circle around the gear 10 due to the fact that the pinion 23 Will rotate and travel around the internal gear 22. In other Words the gears Will have a planetary motion. Since the internal gear 22 is held from rotating, it Will be obvious that the niggerhead 26 will not rotate While the drum 17 is being rotated. Now if the brake 25 is applied and the brake 24 is released, the internal gear 22 Will be caused to rotate by the gearing that connects the same with the motor with the result that the drum 17 Will remain stationary and the niggerhead Will be rotated through the connection of the hub 34 With the internal gear 22.
It will be obvious that the change from one drum to the other can be easily and readily effected Without the loss of time and labor. Consequently the hoisting 4machine as improved is susceptible of a far Wider use and possesses a larger scopev of utility than hoisting machines heretofore used.
This machine is particularly valuable in caisson Work Where for example Water is encountered and the normal speed o-f operation With the niggerhead 26 does not permit of fast enough removal of the containers by which the Water is dipped out. In such instances the drum 17 and pulley 4 With their faster operation can be immediately utilized. Y
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction may be varied through a Wide range Without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose llimiting the patent granted hereon other- Wise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
Inra hoisting machine, a drum, a support- Y ling member secured to one end of said drum and having a shaft, a bearing surrounding said shaft, a second shaft coaxial with said first mentioned shaft, a second drum secured to the outer end of said second shaft, a hub mounted on the inner end of said second shaft, an internal gear having a hub mounted on said bearing concentric with said first shaft, and connected to said firsty mentioned hub for cojoint rotation, a pinion carried by said support and meshing with said internal gear, means forbraking said first mentioned drum and leasing said internal gear for operating said second drum, and means for latching said second shaft against rotation in one direction.'
