Abstract

916,849. Severing by grinding; sawing. BRADSHAW, A. R. Aug. 9, 1961 [Aug. 10, 1960], No. 27666/60. Classes 60 and 145. A section-cutting machine having means for advancing a specimen 29 across the cutting edge of a rotating cutter 9 comprises a " slip " drive between a motor 6 and the feed mechanism, the drive being transmitted through an epicyclic gear. An input shaft 14, Fig. 2, drives through gears 15, 17, coupled through planet wheels 19, 20, and gears 16, 21, an output shaft 22 and through a worm gear 26, 27, the feed screw 4. The planet-carrying wheel 16 is rotatable on the shaft 14 to which the sun wheel 15 is fixed. The sun wheel 17 is also fixed to a short braking shaft 18 coaxial with the input shaft 14. The planet wheels 19, 20 mesh respectively with sun wheels 15, 17 and with each other. A brake drum fixed to the shaft 18 has an adjustably spring-loaded pad 25 bearing on its peripheral surface whereby the torque transmitted to the output shaft may be varied by a screw 31. Under normal cutting conditions the shaft 18 is held, but if an increase in torque is required to drive the output shaft 22 of the gear-box 5 the brake pad 23 is adjusted to prevent rotation of the shaft 18. If rotation of the shaft 18 occurs the planet carrier 16 ceases to rotate so that the drive is not transmitted to the feed-screw 4, with a corresponding reduction in the torque required to rotate the feed-screw, until conditions are reached when the drive is transferred back to the shaft 22; the greater the resistance to rotation of the shaft 18 the more the cutting effort is allowed to build up between the specimen and cutter before the feed-screw drive is interrupted. The cutter 9 may be an abrasive disc of a thickness between 0.005 to 0.020 inch, running at about 10,000 r.p.m., or a circular saw. If a slitting disc is used one of the rubberbonded silicon carbide type is preferred. The specimen holder 3, feed-screw 4, gear-box 5 and drive motor 6 are mounted on a table 10 which is adjustable towards and away from the cutting chamber 2 by a micrometer screw (not shown). Nozzles 30 may project into the chamber 2 to direct water to the face of the disc.
