171,770. Berthiez, C. Aug. 19, 1920. Planing.-The tables of planers and like machines are provided with additional driving- means operative during the cutting-stroke only. An additional belt pulley d, Fig. 3, is loose during the return stroke but is clutched to its shaft to assist in driving the table, soon after the table has started its cutting-stroke, by means of a friction clutch e operated by a rod k and pin j' .engaging a cam slot in a bar h actuated in one direction by a cam on one of the transmission shafts and in the other by a tappet on the table. The clutch is thrown out about 50mm. before the end of the cutting-stroke. In a modification, the additional pulley is dispensed with and the belt is shifted from the quick-return pulley o, Fig. 4, to the pulley p, whereupon it assists the forward belt (not shown) by means of the train of gearing driving the friction clutch w. In a further modification, the additional pulley d, Fig. 5, is clutched to the forward driving-pulley by a claw clutch d<1> thrown in by a tappet 10 on the feed disc and thrown out by an advance tappet 20 on the table. The tappet 20 acts through a twoarmed lever 19, 12, independent of the ordinary reversing tappet lever 14, on a rod 3 having a cam-slot which controls the clutch yoke 7, Fig. 7. The ordinary forward and return belts respectively engage the pulleys 25, 25<1> keyed to the shaft g together with the clutch part 2. The pulleys 1, 26 are loose.
