Abstract

233,433. Sims, E. Feb. 9, 1924. Treadle mechanism; hand driving-mechanism. -Driving-mechanism for lathes, saws, emery wheels, boot-finishing machines, bacon and chaff cutters, cycles, boats, &c. operated by hand or foot, comprises a main lever or treadle 6, and a subsidiary lever or an extension 19 of the main lever, connected respectively to a chain or belt 13 and a crossed chain or belt 16 engaging freewheel sprockets &c. 12 on opposite sides of a fly-wheel 10 on a shaft 9. The other ends of the chains 13, 16 are connected to springs, the spring 14 connected to the chain 13 being stronger than the other spring, so that the chain 16 has a driving effect on the shaft 9 during the return movement of the treadle or lever 6. The shaft 9 is connected to a machine-driving shaft 23 by a chain 21, and may also be provided with a belt pulley, sprocket-wheel, &c. The treadle or lever 6 is provided with a brake block 25 adapted to be brought into engagement with the periphery of the fly-wheel 10 to stop the mechanism. A shock-absorbing buffer block 26 limits the downward movement.
