[Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii).] In a wire-stitching machine, the driving pulley 10 for a conveyer belt 11, Fig. 4, is adapted to be clutched to a driven shaft 17 by a sliding clutch sleeve 18 keyed to the shaft. The sleeve is moved, to engage the clutch teeth 10a, 18a, by a fork 19 when a shaft 20 is rotated against a spring 22. The shaft 20, which extends longitudinally of the stitcher section of the feed saddle, carries at its other end a pawl 25, Fig. 3, which co-operates with a ratchet wheel 26 each tooth of which has two faces 26a, 26b. Also co-operating with the wheel is a projection 28a on a bar 28 which is pivoted to a pivoted lever 27. Similar levers 27 are arranged at each feed station of the machine and are all connected by a hand-bar 29. To start the conveyer belt the operator presses on the bar 29. This steps the wheel 26 half a tooth, moving the pawl 25 outwardly to lie against a tooth face 26a, so rotating the shaft 20 to clutch the pulley 10. When released, the bar 29 is returned by a spring 30. The next operation of the bar 29 steps the wheel another half tooth, declutching the pulley.
