Abstract

7164. Shearer, H. T. March 21. Driving and feed devices. - Consists of an automatic cross-feed mechanism for the grinding-wheels of machines of the kind in which the base B carrying the wheel is fed transversely across the carriage A, which is moved to and fro along the work. The rack 29, through which the carriage is operated by power, is capable of a limited longitudinal motion in relation to the carriage and has a lost - motion connexion with a link 30 having a cam 33 working between rollers 31, 32, the one mounted in a tubular support 28 and the other in a plunger 27. When the rack commences its movement, say from the position shown, it pulls with it the link, which by the engagement of its cam with the rollers forces up the plunger; the plunger lifts the weight 18 and through a bell-crank lever 19 actuates the pawl of the ratchet-wheel 16, the rotation of which is transmitted to the pinion 11 in gear with the rack 10 on the carriage. The feed is thus imparted to the base before the carriage has commenced to move. By the time the face movement of the rack is taken up, the apex of the cam 33 is immediately between the rollers, and the weight of the parts then forces the plunger down, and the link is pushed forward until the end of the slot is against the pin 35. The automatic reversing- gear for the carriage is worked by the rack 36 and pinion 41 on the shaft 38, which operates a wheel carrying adjustable dogs adapted to act, one on each side, on a rocking arm linked to the clutch 47. The clutch is mounted between two oppositely-driven wheels 48, 49 on the shaft 45 from which motion is transmitted to the shaft 43, carrying the pinion which drives the rack 29, through wheels mounted loosely upon the shaft 38. The shaft 38 may carry a handwheel for working the table by hand.
