Abstract
590,952. Grinding the ends of helical springs. HEATH SPRING & NOTION CO., Ltd., and HYDE, B. A. April 21, 1945, No. 10075. [Class 60] A machine for grinding the ends of coiled springs wherein the springs are mounted in a movable carrier and thereby moved between two opposed grinding elements, the faces of which grind the ends of the springs and whose distance apart can be altered, comprises a driving shaft, a clutch-driven feed shaft for controlling the feed movements of the grinding elements towards each other, a clutch-driven actuating shaft for producing the movements of the work holder, a control shaft for disengaging the clutch element on the actuating shaft, and an operating lever for engaging the clutches of the feed and actuating shafts. The grinding wheels 22, Fig. 1, are driven by electric motors 20 carried by saddles 17, which are moved towards and away from each other by a feed screw shaft 13 ; this is driven through clutch 34 by ratchet wheel 36, the pawl 37, Fig. 4, being actuated by crank 41 on driving shaft 12 ; after predetermined angular movement of shaft 13 an abutment 44, carried by arm 43, secured to the shaft 13, moves the pawl 37 out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 36. The work holder is carried by a pivoted arm which is oscillated to carry the work between the grinding wheels, by crank 66, Fig. 5, on actuating shaft 14, which is driven by a sprocket wheel 65, Fig. 6, chain-driven from the driving shaft 12 ; the shaft 14 carries a key 60, Fig. 8, spring-pressed so as normally to engage a groove in the wheel 65, but withdrawn from driving connection therewith by axial movement of member 61. Control shaft 15 carries a star-wheel 70, which is rotated by a pin 71 on the crank 66 actuating the work holder. After a predetermined number of oscillations by the work holder, the control shaft 15 has been rotated to such an extent that an arm 72, Fig. 7, carried thereby contacts on abutment 73, thus moving a stop 74 to free a pivoted lever 62 which is moved by spring 76 to disengage the clutch 60, thus stopping oscillation of the work holder, and also to disengage the clutch 34, thus stopping the motion ; they may be returned to their original distance apart by means of a handle 51 actuating the feed shaft 13 through bevel gears, a pin 54 attached to the handle contacting a stop 53 when the initial setting is reached. The clutches 60 and 34 can be re-engaged to restart the operations by means of handle 35. The saddles 17 carry guide plates 27, Figs. 1 and 5, adjustable thereon and having portions 28 which bear on the ends of the springs before they enter between the grinding wheels.
