Coal cutting machines. - In a cutting- machine for coal and like minerals of the long wall type, a vertical winding - drum is used for slueing the cutting - arm and for hauling the machine, in conjunction with alternative guide-pulleys set at different points transversely of the machine frame, and with means for securing the return end of the hauling-cable at different points transversely of the frame, so that the line of draft may be varied. As shown, one end of the armature shatt ot a motor 27 carries a worm 53 driving the hauling- drum through a worm-wheel 56, a crank and adjustable link 58, an oscillating pawl 63 and ratchet-wheel 62, and spur-wheels 73, 43. To vary the rate of feed, the pawl 63 may, for the first part.of its effective stroke, slide on an arcuate plate 69 adjusted by a handle 72. A friction clutch connects the spur-wheel 43 with the winding-drum 39, Fig. 4. The drum carries plates 44 alternating with plates 45 carried by a sleeve 46, which is connected with or disconnected from the spur-wheel 43 by pins 47 carried by a ring 48 raised and lowered by a hand-wheel 51. When the hand-wheel is screwed down, it first connects the spur-wheel and sleeve, and then forces downwards a ring 49<a> pressing the plates together. The cutting- arm is swung into the working face by the haulage-cable, this being passed over a guidepulley 75 or 76, and secured to a bolt 20 or 21 on the turntable. When the arm is at rightangles to the machine, it is secured by a pivoted bolt 22 engaging a recess 24 or 25 on the turntable. The cable is then disconnected from the arm 16, and carried around one of the pulleys 75, 76, around an anchored pulley at the end of the working face, and back to a clevis 77 provided with means for attachment at different points transversely of the frame.
