Abstract

Coal-cutting machines.-In a coal-cutting machine which is fed by hauling itself along an anchored rope, chain, &c., each side of the machine is provided with pulleys i' mounted in carriages moving in guides l and provided with lugs p for connection as by chains m to the cutter jib, whereby the pull is transferred to the rear of the machine; the slidably-mounted pulleys may also be used for swinging the cutter jib. The idle pulley i<1> may be disconnected from its chain &c. and moved forwardly to support the free end of the feed chain &c., or a separate pulley may be provided for this purpose. The feed sprocket a, or drum a<1>, which may be driven by worm gearing, is mounted on the upper side of the machine frame, which may be reduced in height at this part; a detachable plate may cover the drum or sprocket. Guide pulleys g may be provided and may be inclined as in Fig. 3. Guide bars n may be provided to protect the machine.
