Coal-cutting machines. - In a coal-cutting machine which is fed by hauling on an anchored feed chain &c., a further anchored flexible connection is provided together with winding means which are driven by means other than said connection to wind on the connection at a speed substantially equal to the feeding speed of the machine, whereby when the feed chain &c, breaks while undercutting upwardly in an inclined seam, the machine is held by the flexible connection. As shown, a mining machine 1 has a driven sprocket 2 co-operating with an anchored chain 3 to feed the machine, the chain 3 passing round guide pulleys 4, 6 or 4<a>, 6<a> according to the direction of feed. Detachably secured to the leading side of the machine is a plate 11; bolts 14 secure to the plate 11, and together, bearing members 15, 16 for a spindle 22 to which is keyed a drum 26 and a sprocket 54, the latter engaging and being driven by the feed chain 3, whereby an anchored safety cable 27 is wound on the drum 26. Loosely supported in the drum by a sleeve 29 is a ratchet wheel 30 which may be held stationary by a divided brake band 46 connected to the plate 11 by lugs 47 and operated by means of a screw 49 and stirrup 50. A ring 34 is secured to the drum 26 by a semi-permanent clutch 25 and carries reversible pawls 37 which co-ope:rate with the ratchet wheel to prevent running back of the machine if the feed chain 3 breaks. The pawls 37 are adjusted by rotating a handle 43 which has a sleeve 40 supporting the spring-pressed follower pin 42 of the pawls; the handle is then locked to the drum spindle 22 by a screw 44.
