Coal-cutting machines. -- A coal-cutting machine of the swingable cutter jib type is provided with a haulage drum mounted on a horizontal longitudinal axis and adapted to bo clutched to a power driven shaft and in operative connection with an independent adjustable brake adapted for resisting unwinding. In the cutter chain machine shown, the shaft of the motor has a clutch member automatically engaging a companion clutch member 7, Fig. 5, and may be removed from the machine without disturbing any part thereof: the clutch member 7 drives the vertical spindle 12 through spiral bevel gears 14, 13 held in engagement by rollers 18. The spindle 12 may be coupled to the cutter chain sprocket 19 through sleeve 21 by a, pin clutch 22 controlled by levers 24, 25 and also carries a worm 32 driving a countershaft geared to a longitudinal shaft 37, Fig. 3, which drives the haulage &c. mechanism. The cutter jib is adjusted by means of the haulage rope and is locked by a pin. The shaft 37 drives through spur gear 38, 39 a shaft 40 carrying multiple disc clutches 49, 50 controlled by hand wheel 61 and pins 63 and by hand wheel 59 and pins 52<a> respectively. Cable drums 41, 42 may be connected to the driven members 47, 48 of the clutches 49, 50 respectively by pin clutches 51, 52, whereby either drum may be used to haul the machine or, by adjusting the disc clutches to permit slip, to resist movement of the machine; alternatively either drum may be used to resist movement of the machine by disconnecting the pin clutch 51 or 52 and controlling the drum through a screw operated band brake 81 or 82, on the elongated hub of a pinion 77 or 78 loosely supported by the shaft 37 and engaging a gear 75 or 76 on the drum. Either drum may be driven at low speed from the shaft 40 through gearing 64, 65, countershaft 66, clutch 69 or 70 and gears 67, 75 or 68, 76. Guide pulleys 85 - - 88 are provided for the cables 43, 44 while when the machine is to be used for short-wall working, a bracket 90, Fig. 4, carrying a guide pulley 89 is attached to the gear casing 16.
