Abstract

1,007,645. Safety lowering apparatus; spring drums. SAFETY AUTOMATIC FIRE ESCAPES Ltd. Jan. 7, 1963 [Jan. 10, 1962] No. 904/62. Heading B8B. In safety lowering aparatus as for use in escape of personnel from ships to lifeboats, rope R, Fig. 2, unwound from a spring drum D passes over a pulley 19, Fig. 3, which is connected to a centrifugal brake B through a freewheel C. The arrangement permits the rope R to be re-coiled on the drum D by the action of the spring drive, without the centrifugal brake B being brought into operation. A planetary gear G is arranged between the freewheel C and the centrifugal brake B and the assembly is preferably arranged concentrically within the spring drum D. A fairlead F guides the rope R between the drum D and the pulley 19. The rope R may carry a stirrup 14 in which the foot of the person being lowered is engaged and a free length of rope 18 may be retained in the casing 17 by a releasable flap so that the stirrup 14 may be lowered immediately to the deck level on release of the flap. Safety harness and a hand support may also be provided on the rope 18.
