Abstract
1,107,645. Lifts. F. C. LEONARD. 4 Aug., 1966 [20 Aug., 1965], No. 35818/65. Heading B8L. A lift cage 7 is supported by an endless chain 6, extending around idler sprockets 3, 5, a sprocket 1 on the shaft of a motor 9 and a sprocket 2, which is mounted on the cage 7 and is normally locked against rotation. When desired, for example when the cage stops between floors, the sprocket 2 can be unlocked by a control 8 to allow the cage to descend under gravity, the rate of such descent being limited automatically. A centrifugal-clutch type brake or a sliding vane or gear pump, whereby oil under pressure can be directed to rams arranged to force the cage guide shoes 10 against guide bars 11 in the lift shaft, may be provided. The cage release control may be actuated automatically if the power fails while the cage is in normal motion. In a modification (not shown), the chain and sprockets 1, 2 are replaced by a rope and capstan drums. In a further modification the chain or rope, instead of being endless, is secured at one end to the cage and at the other end to a winch drum, the drum being connected to the motor through a releasable coupling. In a further modification, the chain or rope is connected at one end to the motor-driven winch drum and at the other end to a drum mounted on the lift cage for rotation but which is locked in normal use.
