Abstract

113,472. Walden, W. Feb. 19, 1917. Brakes and retarding-apparatus for winding and paying-out apparatus.-A fire-escape of the kind comprising a wire-rope ladder designed to be rolled up in a box or cabinet situated inside a building is provided with means by which a person descending can regulate his own speed by means of a rope running down the side of the ladder, and is also provided with a life-line which can be similarly braked by the per. son descending the ladder. Fig. 2 shows the apparatus with the casing removed; a roller provided with hand wheels c carries a flexible rope ladder b the bottom rung of which is weighted, and is provided with ratchet and pawl checking means or with rim brakes d operated by handles e. An alternative braking arrangement for use by the person descending with the ladder comprises a drum p, Fig. 3, situated near the side of the rope ladder provided with a brake q operated by a rope s. A rope g carrying a sling p for lowering a person passes around the drum c which is provided with brakes similar to those on the ladder drum.
