Abstract
1351987 Lowering apparatus O BRDA 15 July 1971 [31 Dec 1970] 33320/71 Heading B8B A device for roping down persons or loads from an elevation comprises a cylinder 2 mounted on a supporting member 1 by a bearing permitting rotation of the cylinder in one direction only and a rope 15 wound on the cylinder such that when the rope end not carrying the load is pulled, the cylinder is rotated and when the rope end 22 to which the load is attached is pulled a braking action is effected by the frictional force between the rope and cylinder such that the load may only be lowered by gradually releasing the first said end of the rope to reduce the said frictional force. Guides 14, 14<SP>1</SP> feed the rope to and from the cylinder and a further guide 13 keeps the rope coils to one end of the cylinder. In a first embodiment Fig. 5 (not shown) the supporting member is suspended from the elevated point from which the load is to be lowered, the load being attached to its rope end and the other rope end depending to the ground where an operator pays out the rope to release the friction grip of the device and lower the load. If the load is a person, he could control his lowering by paying out the other rope end as he is lowered. In the further embodiment Fig. 6 (not shown) the load is attached directly to the supporting member which is lowered down the rope which has its normally load engaging end secured to structure at the elevated point. The device moves down the rope as the pressure on the rope is reduced by an operator on the ground. In the embodiment of Fig. 7 (not shown) the device is lowered as in the arrangement of Fig. 6 but the device is connected to a further rope extending from another device corresponding to that shown in Fig. 5. In a final embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the load is supported from a pulley supported in a loop formed in the load supporting end of the device rope.
