Abstract

826,133. Double winches. WELIN-MACLACHLAN DAVITS Ltd. March 19, 1957 [Jan. 3, 1956], No. 208/56. Class 78 (5). Reversible electric motor 2 drives winch drums 24, 24 for lowering lifeboats, through shaft 3A, centrifugal clutch 6, unidirectional ratchet freewheel drive 11, pinion 15 and through gearing 16, 19, 20, 22 and 23, the latter being fixed to the respective winch drum. Additionally the system comprises centrifugal brake 26 and hand brake 28, the latter operating unidirectionally through ratchet freewheel 31. The motor 2 also drives winch drums 24 and 34 from shaft 3B through a similar gearing system, except that the freewheels are arranged so that one transmits from the motor 2 clockwise motion thereof and the other transmits anticlockwise motion thereof. Operation. Lowering. The first lifeboat, held by cables passing round the path of drums 24, 24, is lowered under its own weight by releasing hand brake 28. Similarly the second lifeboat, held by cables passing round drums 34, 34 is lowered by releasing the respective hand brake 28, the maximum speed being governed by the respective centrifugal brake. Raising. The first lifeboat is raised by switching on the motor to rotate in the clockwise direction, and the second lifeboat is raised by switching on the motor to rotate in the anticlockwise direction, the two gearings being rendered independent by the reverse freewheels and by the springs of the centrifugal brake.
