Abstract

432,861. Winches. POLLAK, J. E., 20, Holborn, London.-(Kampnagel Akt.- Ges. vorm. Nagel & Kaemp; 4, Barmbeckerstrasse, Hamburg, Germany) April 10, 1934, No. 10722/35. Divided out of 433,392, under which a Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Jan. 23, 1935. [Class 78 (v)] [See also Group XXXIII] In winches for lifting and lowering floating bodies which are rising and falling owing to wave motion, means is provided for giving the lifting hook a similar up-and-down movement to that of the body before attachment of the hook thereto, thus preventing collisions between the heavy hook and the body, which may be a fragile structure, such as a sea-plane. The hook 12 is carried by a rope 11 wound round a drum 10 freely mounted on a shaft 19 and on an extension 16 of the casing of a main motor 13. The motor pinion 26 drives the drum 10 through a gear-wheel 25 meshing with a toothed ring 27 fixed inside the drum 10, the wheel 25 being carried on a frame 18 fixed to the shaft 19. A secondary drum 50 is fixed to the shaft 19 which is driven through pinions 21, 22 by a secondary motor 14. A cable 51 wound on the drum 50 passes freely through a guide 52 on the hook 12. Fixed to the drum 50 is a ratchet wheel 30 adapted to be locked from rotation in one direction by pawls which are automatically electrically retracted when the current to the motor 13 is switched off. In operation the cable 51 is attached to the floating body and the effect of the motor 14, which may be electric or weight-operated, is to maintain the cable 51 taut. The shaft 19 thus oscillates in time with the wave motion, and imparts its swing to the drum 10, the motor pinion 26 being held against rotation, when the motor 13 is not energized, by an automatic brake 28. The hook 12 thus rises and falls with the waves, and its position relative to the floating body can be adjusted by operation of the motor 13, thus facilitating attachment. On energizing the motor 13 the ratchet 30 is gripped and therefore the shaft 19 held stationary, thus allowing the rope 11 to lift the load. The motor 14 may be replaced by a weight attached to a rope, or may be arranged inside the drum 10. The differential effect on the hook 12 may be obtained by two separate drums, one driven by the motor 13 and the other by the motor 14, the drums carrying the ends of a single rope reaved over a pulley on the hook. Specification 433,392 is referred to.
