Abstract
965,417. Winding and paying out apparatus. SCHAT DAVITS Ltd. Oct. 18, 1960, No. 35642/60. Heading B8B. In winding arrangement on board ship for hoisting and lowering a lifeboat there is an auxiliary motor which, either direct or through the intermediary of toothed wheels, is non- detachably connected to the drum on which one end of the winding tackle is wound, the arrangement being such that the auxiliary motor exerts sufficient force to keep the tackle taut, although a movement of the drum under the influence of forces acting on the tackle as a result of the boat's weight, is not hampered. As shown in Fig. 1, there are two drums 1, 15, each connected by gearing with a respective auxiliary motor 28, 30. A single main driving motor 10 drives the drums 1, 15, through gearing 11, 12 and respective clutches 7, 21. The gear 12 is rigid with a ratchet wheel 25 which co-operates with a pawl 26. A clutch 35 can be operated by means of a control 37 so as to directly connect the drive of the drum 15 with the drive of the drum 1. In operation, the clutches 7 and 21 are engaged when it is desired to rotate the drums 1, 15, in the hoisting direction by the action of the motor 10. The drums are held against rotation in the direction of lowering by the ratchet 25 and pawl 26. When it is desired to rotate one of the drums 1, 15, in the direction of lowering the respective clutch 7, 21, is disengaged. If both clutches 7 and 21 are disengaged both drums may be rotated in the direction of lowering together by engaging the clutch 35. Brakes 6 and 20 are associated with clutches 7 and 21. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the pawl and ratchet 26, 25, is combined with the clutch 35. In Fig. 3 a single auxiliary motor 95 is provided for two drums 80, 81, which rotate together. In the modification shown in dotted and dot-dash lines in Fig. 3 a separate auxiliary motor 97, 99 is provided in respect each drum 80, 81. The rope passes off each drum to a tackle block 107 and the end of the rope that would normally be fixed, is wound on the drum 98 of the respective auxiliary motor.
