Abstract

198,778. Aaron, S. E. March 9, 1922. Boat raising and lowering gear.-A device for controlling lowering operations from the boat itself instead of from on deck comprises ropes 27 which extend to the boat and are run parallel with the falls to the double barrelled winch drum where the ropes 27, after passing over the fair lead pulley 28, Fig. 3, are secured to levers 26 to which the ends of a band brake 25 are anchored. During lowering operations, the ropes 27 are rove round cleats 14 carried by the lower fall blocks 11 and the running friction between the ropes and cleats tensions the ropes to a sufficient extent to pull on the band brakes 25, the degree to which the brake is operated being regulated by regulating the running friction in any suitable manner. To compensate for the tension put in the ropes spring tension elements are introduced into the length. In the winch associated with this braking device, the shaft 16 carrying the brake drums and the winch drums W is squared to receive an operating-handle and has a worm wheel 18 which may be clutched to the shaft. The worm co-operating with the wheel 18 is mounted on a shaft 15. If it is desired to operate the winch by power, the motor 24 is provided with a gear wheel 32 which engages with a gear wheel 33 splined on the shaft 15, a screw device operated by a hand wheel being employed to bring the wheels 32, 33 in and out of engagement. The winch mechanism may be duplicated for operating lifeboats on each side of the vessel.
