Coal-cutting machines.-A shortwall mining-machine has two forwardly-projecting vertically-spaced cutter-chain jibs 21, 18 extending beneath the motor 12, the upper jib 21 being shorter than the lower jib 18. A guide 29 for the upper jib depends from the main frame 11 and a guide 16 for the lower jib is connected to an underframe 13; an intermediate guide 17 is connected to the guides 16, 29, by bolts 36. Blocks 40, 41 are carried by the upper and lower jibs respectively and a screw 43 co-operates with these blocks to tighten the lower cutter chain independently. Nuts 39 carried by the upper jib co-operate with screws 38 bearing against the main frame 11, whereby the two cutter chains may be tightened simultaneously. The cutter chains are driven from a single shaft 26 through connected sprockets 24, 25 and a clutch 27.
