Abstract

Coal-cutting machines.-A coal-mining machine has a cutter chain moving an elongated frame, an endless conveyer mounted between the cutting and return strands of the cutter chain for conveying away the coal, means for advancing the machine and means on the cutter chain for raising the coal over the forward edge of the frame on to the conveyer. A base plate 2 has spaced guides 4, 5 for the cutter chain 17 arranged longitudinally, and a similarly arranged channel beam 3 adjacent its rear edge; a cover plate 5a connects the beam 3 with the rear guide 5. Each guide 4, 5 is longitudinally and horizontally divided and a cover plate 6 is fixed between the guides. A conveyer C comprising chains 14 and flights 15 moves above and below the plate 6 and around sprocket shafts 9, 10. The cutter chain moves at one end round a sprocket 19 driven by toothed gearing 28 and worm gearing 31 from a motor 25, and at the other end moves round two sprockets 21, 21a carried by a block 22 adjusted by a screw 23. The end 13 of the conveyer is elevated for delivering to tubs &c. and the conveyer shaft 9 is driven from the motor through the gearing 28 and chain gearing 39. The motor also drives, through chain gearing 54 and bevel gearing 50, a longitudinal shaft 44 which, through worm gearing, drives a series of screws 47 engaging nuts carried by hydraulic roof jacks 49, thereby advancing the machine. Some of the bit holders of the cutter chain carry ploughs 60, Fig. 10, with inclined faces 61 and vertical sides 62, the ploughs lifting material for delivery to the conveyer.
