Coal-cutting machines.-In a machine of the chain type, a motor G drives a capstan A<1> through gearing B, C, D, E and drives a forwardly-placed haulage drum K<1> through gearing R, P, N, M, a clutch and worm glaring K<2>; the cutter-chain driving-sprocket H is loosely mounted on the capstan shaft A and is coupled thereto by the insertion of a pin &c. into apertures H<1>, J<1> in the sprocket H and a disc J respectively. Pulleys and rollers are provided at the corners of the machine frame to guide the haulage or other ropes.
