Coal-cutting machines.-In a coal-cutting machine adapted to be mounted on a truck for transport or for use in arc-wall cutting, and to be dismounted for long wall work, the truck being driven from the motor of the machine, a power transmission element is positioned entirely within the bounding planes of the side walls of the machine and co-operates, for driving the truck, with an auxiliary transmission device adapted to be readily coupled with, or uncoupled from, the transmission device. The crank shaft 23, Fig. 4, which drives the usual haulage drum, also drives a hollow shaft. 44 through bevel gears 45, 46; the shaft 44 is positioned entirely within the machine frame. A sprocket 35 has a stud shaft 48 which is inserted in the shaft 44 when the truck is to be driven, clutch members 49 coupling the shafts and being formed as to be held together by the rotative pressure. A suitable, closure may be provided for the hollow shaft 44 when the machine is dismounted. The truck has a slidable auxiliary frame 38 to assist in loading of unloading the machine, movement of the frame 38 being limited by engagement of a pivoted latch 39 with a member 40 on the truck.
