Coal-cutting machines. -Relates to coal-cutting machines of the sidecutting type in which there are provided two cables respectively for propelling the machine along the face of the coal and for serving as a retarding-cable acting in the opposite direction, and consists in special arrangements of d r i v i n g mechanism. The electric-motor shaft 14, Figs. 1 and 2, drives a shaft 18 through spur pinions 15, 16 and safety friction clutch 22. The shaft 18 carries a bevel-wheel 24 engaging a master bevel-gear 25, which is keyed on a vertical shaft 26. The lower part of this shaft is flanged and provided with holes, which may be engaged by the pins 36 of a suitable camoperated clutch, by which the sprocket-wheel 11 of the cutter-chain 9 is driven. On the hub of the master gear is a worm 51 which drives the shaft 53 through the worm-wheel 52. On the shaft is loosely mounted a drum 57 for the retarding-cable 58, which may be brought into action by means of a handoperated friction clutch 60. A similar handoperated clutch 76, Fig. 3, at the other end of the shaft brings into operation the spur-wheel 74, which drives the drum 93, Fig. 1, for the propelling-cable 101 through the medium of gearing 84, 87, 88. This drum may be disconnected from its shaft, so that it may be operated by handles 104 when required. The retarding- cable 58 passes through a swivel fair-lead 122, so that it may be led off in any direction. The apparatus is provided with a reversing- switch 109 and a regulating-switch 106 operable from either side. Specification 8502/14 is referred to.
