Gear-cutting.-In a gear-cutting machine in in which banks of reciprocating cutters are arranged on one side or on diametrically opposite sides of the blank, and the spaces are cut in the blank by vertical movement of the blank or cutters, a dividing-mechanism is combined with the cutter-carriage operating-mechanism and the blank-operating mechanism, the dividing motion acting through a differential mechanism during the return movements of the cuttercarriage and blank to cause an extra rotation to be given to the blank or be subtracted therefrom. The tangential motion of the bank of cutters during cutting is produced through gearing by a gear-wheel 12, and the corresponding motion of the blank by a bevel - gear 5. During the slow cutting rotation of the blank, the bevel 5 is driven through an inoperative differential gear 19, the box of which is keyed to a shaft 6 by a sleeve 15 carrying the sunwheel 16 of the differential gear, the sleeve 15 being driven by a clutch 26 splined thereto and engaging a slowly-driven worm-wheel 27 loose on the sleeve 15. During the quick - return movement of the blank, the sleeve 15 is coupled by clutch 26 to a fast-driven pinion 14 loose on the sleeve, and at the same time rotation is added to or subtracted from the shaft 6 by a pinion 23 in the differential box which is driven through gearing by a pinion 40, which pinion 40 was coupled bv means of a clutch 39 to a constantly-driven shaft 41 by the cutter slide operating, at the end of its stroke, a rod 34 moving a lever 35 to turn the double-armed lever 38 to couple the clutch 39 and move a pin 50 out of one of a series of holes 49 in a sleeve 48 which then rotates. On a sufficient predetermined rotation having been given to the pinion 23, the pin 50 re-enters one of the holes 49 and uncouples the clutch 39.
