17,307. Llewellin, W. M. July 21. Gear - cutting. - Double helical wheels are cut by planing. In a tooth-curve generating-machine, the blank E is oscillated through a dividing-apparatus B by a wormwheel C driven by a shaft C<3> connected to shafts C', Y by differential gearing, not shown. The shaft C' is change-geared to a shaft G<2>, which drives a right and left hand screw for reciprocating the tool heads D<2>, d<2>, and the shaft Y is change-geared to the feed screw J for giving the saddle carrying the cutter heads a feed tangential to the blank. The shaft G<2> is oscillated by a pinion meshing with a rack F<3> reciprocated by a crank pin and slot. The two tools are operating upon adjacent tooth spaces in order to avoid fouling. The tools may act on the same space, a hole or groove being provided at the centre for them to cut into. In a modification, the tool slides are traversed by half nuts carried on levers, and are returned after the cut by weights. The right and left hand screw rotates continuously, and cams throw the nuts into and out of engagement alternately. The reciprocating motion of the rack is conveyed to the blank through means such as elliptic gearing to produce a uniform motion during each reversal. The machine may be employed for form cutter work, the differential gear being rendered inoperative for such purpose.
