Brake mechanism.-In back-pedalling brake apparatus for cycles of the type comprising oneway clutch mechanism on the crank axle connected to both front and pear brakes through transmission rods, cables, &c., the clutch mechanism is adapted to operate the brakes independently of each other, so that if one fails the other is not affected. On the crank axle 1, a cylindrical sleeve 6 and a sleeve segment 2 are mounted side by side so as to be rotatable in a sleeve 7 secured in the crank bracket 8, and are provided with spring-pressed pawls 10 co-operating with notches 12 in the axle 1 on backpedalling. The segment 2 is connected by a pivoted rod 13 and a cable 3 to the front wheel brake, and is retained in its inoperative position by a helical spring 5, which bears against its lower face 15 and is contained in a tubular abutment 18 adapted to be adjusted in position by means of a screw-threaded part 16 and a square head 19. The sleeve 6 is connected to the rear brake yoke 23 by a pivoted rod 4 and a rod 20, which slides in a guide bush 25 and is provided with an abutment disc 27 normally pressed against the bush 25 by a spring 28. The bush 25 screws into a hollow member 24, so as to be adjustable by means of an hexagonal head or nut 26.
