Abstract

268,439. Bowden Wire, Ltd., and Nisbet, A. H. Jan. 1, 1926. Actuated or applied by running axle or wheel; force-transmitting mechanism.-In Bowden wire or like actuating or control devices in which an operating length of such mechanism is connected to one pair of arms of a pair of levers hinged or pivoted to one another intermediately of their ends, a second length of Bowden or like mechanism and/or a spring, is or are connected to the other pair of adjacent arms by means which are adjustable along the length of the arms to vary the distance thereof from the pivot according to requirements. The levers 10, 11 are shown in Fig. 1 pivoted to a bracket 13 on the chassis or frame of a motor cycle or vehicle, the Bowden &c. mechanism being employed to actuate front and rear brakes &c. In conjunetion therewith, Bowden or like actuating means as set forth in Specification 260,355 is employed. Bowden mechanism l actuated from the handle bar of a motor cycle &c. operates a lever m to bring brake shoes into action thereby partially rotating the disc j and operating through a link g<2> and a plunger within a casing a a second length of Bowden mechanism l<1> as set forth in Specification 260,355. The second length of Bowden mechanism l<1> engages one pair of arms 16, 17, of the levers 10, 11, the Bowden casing 19 being divided and abutting against stops 20 which may be adjusted in holes 34. A stop or abutment 27 is provided on the frame for the end of the casing 19. The Bowden cable 18 directly actuates a brake operating lever 29 pivoted at 30 to a fixed disc &c., 31 on the rear axle, an adjustable connection 28a, and a retracting spring (not shown), being provided. The brake lever 29 may be independently actuated through a connecting rod 32. To the other arms 21, 22 of the lexers 10, 11 are adjustably connected a spring or springs 23, 27 and/or a third length of Bowden mechanism l<2> which may actuate an independent brake on the front axle or a brake which may react upon the first braking device j when fully actuated or alternatively a brake elsewhere situated as on the wheel of a side car. The Bowden mechanism l<2> comprises inner and outer members 24, 25 connected to stops or abutments 26 adjustable in any of a series of holes 21a, 22a in the lever arms to regulate the distance from the fulcrum 12. The spring 23 is similarly adjustable in holes 33. The spring 37 which may be used' in conjunction with or in place of the spring 23, is adjustable by means of a nut 36 and may also be variably positioned. Either the springs or the Bowden mechanism 24, 25 may be dispensed with. Other forms of levers may be employed such as shown in Fig. 6.
