Abstract

207,297. Hopcraft, H. Sept. 14, 1922. Brake mechanism.- A back-pedalling brake mechanism for cycles &c. of the kind wherein a pawl is mounted in a sleeve 1 rotatably disposed about the central portion of the crank axle 7, is characterized by a single groove, or notch 11 in the axle for engagement by the pawl. The notch is so positioned that it is engaged by the pawl after the right-hand pedal has been moved backwards from its uppermost position, and the left-hand pedal can thus freely swing about its lowermost position to permit of dismounting without the brake being applied. To facilitate the assemblage of the sleeve about the axle the sleeve is longitudinally slotted as at 10, and it also has curved or grooved edges for engaging with the balls 12 of the bearings in the bottom bracket. The sleeve is connected to the brake yoke 18 by an eye-pin 14, a U-shaped strip 16, and a guided rod 15, the rod being fitted with a cushioning-spring 21 and a relief spring 20.
