Abstract

359,068. Brakes. LOCKHEED HYDRAULIC BRAKE CO., Ltd., 32, Clemens Street, and VESTRAUT, G. VAN, 23, St. Mary's Road, both in Leamington Spa. July 24, 1930, No. 22355. [Class 103 (i).] An automatically adjustable stop device for limiting the return movement of a lever or other part of brake mechanism so as to maintain a constant clearance between the brake shoes and the drum comprises in one construction a rod 4 telescoping into a tube 5 provided with a slot 5b engaging a fixed pin 6. The rod 4 is provided with circumferential grooves or a screw-thread of buttress formation forming a rack engaged by a toothed member 7 disposed in a slot in the rod 5 and pressed into engagement by a cylindrical spring 8. If in the application of the brakes, the lever 1 by reason of wear of the brake shoes moves a distance greater than that provided by the slot 5b, together with the length of a tooth, the rod 4 slips a tooth relatively to the piece 7 and the wear is thus taken up. The slotted connection may be provided between the rod 4 and lever 1 instead of in the position shown. Or instead of a slotted connection between either of the rods and the pin 6 or lever 1, the slot in the rod 5 for the toothed piece 7 may be elongated. The rods 4, 5 may be slidably arranged without being telescopic. Fluid-pressure.-The lever 1 may as shown be operated by fluid-pressure piston 3b in a cylinder 3 formed with a lug 3a for mounting it on a crossmember 9 of the chassis of a motor road vehicle. A protector 10 of bellows formation excludes dirt.
