Abstract

Four - stroke-cycle engines; cylinders, internal passages and valves seats of, and pipes for. - To ensure mixture of the indrawn air with the liquid or powdered fuel, the induction valve is held closed over a variable period during the suction stroke. As shown, an adjustable wedge 11 is interposed between the valve stem 10 and a set-screw 14 carried by a valve-actuating lever 15. Unvaporized fuel is caught in a channel 5 and picked up by the air flow; a baffle 6 in the induction passage and a perforated ring 9 surrounding the valve 7 ensure mixture. The valve seat 8 projects into the cylinder. The air passage is shown inclined to the cylinder axis, but the valve may be inclined to a vertical air passage. In another arrangement the valve stem and its guide is placed within the air passage, the baffle 6 being formed on the guide.
