Abstract
289,565. Jackson, L. Mellersh-, (Porter Engine Development, Inc.). Feb. 1, 1927. Valves; regulating.-A rotary valve 5, having a recess 14 controlling inlet at 10 and exhaust at 13, is fitted with an angularly adjustable sleeve 8 having ports 40, 41 co-operating with the inlet and exhaust passages 10, 13 so that, as the sleeve 8 is adjusted, the times of closing of exhaust and of opening of inlet are varied, while the opening of exhaust and closing of inlet remain the same. The sleeve 8 may be adjusted automatically according to the opening of the mixture throttle by providing the sleeve with teeth 16, Fig. 2, engaging a rack 17 connected to a piston 18, which is subjected to the action of the suction in the intake pipe as opposed by a spring 22. The valve is fitted with a sparking-plug 32 which carries a contact 44 engaging a fixed contact 29, which is elongated to allow for variations in ignition timing. An oil-impregnated lining 9 of " genalite ", composed of bronze and graphite, is fitted between the valve 5 and the sleeve 8, and packing 38 of the same material is provided at the cylinder port 3, the packing being pressed on to the valve by a diaphragm 39.
