Abstract

317,111. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). May 5, 1928. Powdered - fuel engines. - To remove combustion residues, an annular space 8, formed between a stepped piston and a stepped cylinder, is maintained continuously at a higher pressure than that in the combustion chamber 7, with which it is always in communication by an annular gap A. To effect this during the compression stroke, the compression ratio of the space 8 is greater than that of the chamber 7 and in the twostroke - cycle engine shown in Fig. 1, compressed air or other scavenging medium enters in a tangential direction through ports 3 and through valve-controlled ports 14, 14, 22, an exhaust valve 9 being provided in the cylinder head. Shortly before, or simultaneously with, the admission of fuel through a valve 10, higher pressure scavenging medium is admitted through a valve 12 to maintain the excess pressure in the space 8 during the expansion stroke; this scavenging medium may be compressed in an annular space 17 formed by a second step on the piston; alternately, a liquid or a gaseous fuel may be admitted by the valve 12 and ignited. The port 3 may be arranged between the first two piston rings and be valve-controlled, and the scavenging medium may be mixed with a lubricant. The application to a four-stroke-cycle ,engine is also described.
