Abstract

318,277. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). May 31, 1928. Pistons; packing-substitutes. - In an engine using powdered fuel the combustion chamber 14 is separated from the sliding surfaces between the cylinder and piston by two annular chambers 4, 6 formed by the inwardly projecting cylinder head and a skirt 1<a> on the piston. The starting fuel and exhaust valves 7, 8, 9 are carried by the head; the air for combustion is admitted through valves 13 carried by the piston and passes through both chambers 4 and 6. This air cools the piston and may be the only scavenging medium used; if desired scavenging gas or vapour may be admitted through the ports 10 and compressed gas or steam through the ports 12. The orifices 10, 12 are opened just before ignition of the powdered fuel the inflow of steam &c. preventing the solid fuel particles entering between the cylinder and piston; a gaseous or liquid fuel may be admitted through the ports 10 for the same purpose. Atomized lubricant is added to the scavenging medium before admission to the cylinder. In a modification a liquid cleaning medium is used in a vertical engine. Air is admitted through the cylinder ports 15, Fig. 2; two annular grooves 16, 17 connected by a narrow neck 18 are formed on the cylinder below the air ports. A flow of liquid is maintained from the groove 16 to the other groove and cleans the piston surface. A gauge glass 21 indicates the liquid level.
