Abstract

Centrifugal governors.-In engines, particularly turbines, which are supplied with steam from steam accumulators, the stroke of the members controlling the admission to the engine is limited by a stop or its equivalent which is adjusted by hand or automatically in accordance with the accumulator pressures. The object is to prevent the admission to the engine of an excessive quantity of high pressure steam. In Fig. 1, the admission valve V is controlled by a speed-governor Z, but its stroke is limited by a stop A the position of which is determined by a spring-pressed piston K the upper side of which is subjected to the pressure in the steam accumulator. A modification is described in which the stop co-operates with a governor-actuated slide adapted to open a number of admission valves in succession. In Fig 3, the valve V is actuated by a servo-motor H, and the stop A co-operates with the floating lever R which controls the pilot valve S. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the governor Z controls the admission of fluid to the under side of a spring-pressed valve piston H, and the piston K, which is subject to accumulator pressure, acts by positioning the leak-away valve W<2>.
