Abstract

543,916. Servomotor control of internal combustion engines. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Sept. 18, 1940. No. 14329. Convention date, Sept. 21, 1939. [Class 135] In apparatus for the servomotor control of one or more internal combustion engines in a power plant there is provided an intermediate adjusting element (piston 18) which while being controlled by the main controller 22 can hold the adjusting member (two-armed lever 19) in intermediate step positions between the main step positions. The fuel pump 4 of an engine 1 is controlled by a governor 2 the tension of the spring 5 of which is altered by movement of a piston 6 by fluid controlled by a valve 7. The main controller 22 moves a contact segment 24 to electrically actuate valves 29 ... 32 which regulate the flow of air or other fluid to the piston 18 and to pistons 11 ... 13, Fig. 3, constituting the main adjusting elements. The pistons 11 ... 13 are progressively shorter in length and act on the lever 19 through a crosshead 14. The 0 and 1 positions of controller 22 correspond to the lowest speed of the engine, the load being switched in for position 1. The main stop positions correspond to positions 2, 4, 6, 8 of the controller 22, the corresponding pistons 11 ... 13 acting alone for positions 4, 6, 8, whilst the intermediate stop positions correspond to positions 1, 3, 5, 7 of the controller, in which positions the piston 19 also is actuated. Instead of driving a gearing 38, Fig. 1, the engine 1 may drive a generator 39, Fig. 5, the output of which is regulated by a servomotor 44, 45 controlled through a linkage 42, 43, and a resistance 46, 47, whereby the excitation of the generator is so arranged that the torque depends on the speed at which the device is set. A valve 48 may be disposed between the valve 44 and its casing and be operated against a spring 52 by fluid flowing in a pipe 51 under the control of an additional valve 50 controlled by the controller 22. By this means two different torque steps are provided for each speed setting of the engine. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to non-electrical means for operating the valves. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
