Abstract

465,649. Controlling internal-combustion engine electric power units. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Aug. 5, 1936, No. 21606. Convention date, Aug. 12, 1935. [Class 135] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXV] A power unit comprising an internal-combustion engine driving a main electric generator from which current is supplied for example to the traction motors of a vehicle and provided with a speed governor adapted on the one hand to regulate the fuel feed pumps and on the other to actuate the control valve of a servomotor operating a rheostat in the excitation circuit of the main generator, is fitted with an adjustable limitation device for determining, at will, the maximum value to which the fuel supply can be increased. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the movable sleeve 9 of the centrifugal governor 34 is coupled by a lever 10<1> and spring link 19-21 to a rack 22 adapted to rotate pinions splined to the plungers of the fuel feed pump 23. The sleeve is also coupled by a second lever 10 and lever 13 to the control valve 14 of a servomotor 15 adapted to operate the movable arm 18 of a rheostat 5 in circuit with a separate exciter and part of the field circuit of the main generator. To limit the movement of the rack 22 a hinged stop 27 is provided. This stop is normally held against a fixed pin 29 by a spring, but is moved into one of two other positions nearer the rack when one or both of two solenoids 30, 31 are energized consequent on movement of the drum switch 46. The governor is loaded by three springs successively brought into operation by admitting compressed air through solenoid actuated cocks 40, 41, to the spaces above a pair of telescoping pistons. These solenoids are controlled bv further contacts on the drum switch. With the drum shown there is one fuel setting for each speed setting, but a modification is described giving two fuel settings for each speed setting. In a modification the spindle of the control valve is arranged in line with the pump control rack. In this form the variable loading of the governor is dispensed with. The stop may be controlled through mechanical, electrical or hydraulic means and may be influenced in accordance with the pressure temperature or humidity of the atmosphere or in accordance with two or more of these conditions simultaneously. The switch 46 may be provided with a locking device whereby the whole of the resistance 5 may be made effective as long as the switch is in its zero position. This device may comprise a double change-over cock inserted in the supply conduit 16 and in the discharge conduit 17<1>, whereby fluid may be admitted through the conduit 171 and discharge through the conduit 16 and so move the piston 15 to the extreme right-hand end of the cylinder. Specification 379,882, [Group XXVI], is referred to.
