Abstract

497,229. Transmitting mechanical power. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. June 14, 1937, No. 16439. Convention date, June 27, 1936. [Class 38 (iv)] In a system in which the voltage of a generator driven by an internal-combustion engine is regulated in accordance with the speed, so that, at any one setting of a controller, the load on the engine is constant, comparison may be made between a wattmeter and a fuel setting indicator so that faulty working will be revealed by divergencies of the indications from the appropriate readings. The generator 2 driven by the engine 1 supplies motors 4 and also drives an exciter 3 in circuit with the generator field 6 and regulating resistance 7. The generator output is indicated by wattmeter 59. The engine may be run at any of several speeds or the torque may be altered in accordance with the setting of controller 62 which adjusts (a) the spring loading on the governor through leads 32, 42 and windings 41 supplying electromagnets operating valves 34, 43 controlling pistons 36, 38, bringing one or two additional loading springs into action, and (b) field resistance 7 through electromagnets 22, 21, lever 19 and valves 10 controlling admission of pressure fluid on to top of piston 9. The governor 14 adjusts lever 25 pivoted at 24, this lever at its lower end adjusting rod 26 connected to the fuel injector control members, and at its upper end moving pointer 15 over a dial. The pointer 15 also adjusts the upper end of lever 19 so that the value of field resistance 7 depends upon both the setting of controller 62 and the engine governor. The indications of the wattmeter 59 should approximate to the indication given by pointer 15 on scale 53.
