Abstract

279,542. Defrance, A., and VersillÚ, P. July 26, 1926. Vaporizers, external.-A charge-atomizing and heating device comprises a body 1 mounted between the carburettor and the engine and provided with (1) conduits 3 for the circulation of a heating fluid such as exhaust gases or hot water, the supply of which is controlled by a valve connected to the carburettor throttle so that one valve opens as the other closes, and (2) a series of channels 5 in each of which is situated an atomizer 8, Fig. 6, consisting of a central core 8<1> provided with narrow ribs 8<11>, the ribs 8<11> being cut away at one or more places to form intermediate chambers 8<111> into which the mixture expands as it passes through the device. The number of channels 5 in action is controlled by a rotary valve 6 which may be interconnected with the throttle valve of the carburettor. In a modification in which the valve 6 is dispensed with, the atomizers 8 are slidably mounted and provided with conical upper ends normally held out of contact with conical outlets on the channels 5 by springs, the passage of the mixture being controlled by lifting certain of the atomizers successively, to close the corresponding channels, through cams interconnected with the throttle valve.
