Abstract
276,783. M-O Valve Co., Ltd., and Hall, T, r. B. July 9, 1926. Vacuum tubes.-Grid electrodes for thermionic valves are made by winding the grid wire upon a mandrel and forming the turns of the wire to the required shape simultaneously around a grid support and a former smaller than the mandrel. Wire may be helically wound simultaneously about a mandrel and a support wire as described in Specification 283,084 and the turns may be electrically welded to the support wire. A former 5, Fig. 2, may be threaded through the grid wire 2 parallel to the support wire 1 after removal of the mandrel and the wire formed by jaws 6 to embrace the whole of the periphery of the wire 1 with overlapping indentations forming a neck 7, Fig. 3, adjacent the wire 1. The wire 2 may be electrically welded to the sides of the wire 1 at 8, 9. When the wire 1 is of nickel or other relatively soft metal and the wire 2 of harder metal such as molybdenum, the mandrel may be on the smaller side so that the jaws 6 tend to stretch the wire 2 and press it into the wire 1. The grid may be of flattened or circular form with one or more support wires. With the wires 1, 2 of diameter 0.4 mm. and 0.175 mm., the diameter of the mandrel and former may be 1.3 and one mm. respectively.
