Abstract
165,217. Quilter, W. A. E. March 24, 1920. Vacuum tubes.-The grid of a thermionic valve is formed in two parts relatively movable one to the other, so that the effective apertures of the grid may be varied. As shown, the grid consists of two coaxial wire helices C, D of the same pitch, the inner one D being fixed, and the outer one C mounted between bearings B, E and carrying a soft iron pole-piece H adjacent to a fixed ring-shaped core O, which is provided with a gap, and is energized by a winding K outside the bulb, so that the position of the pole H and the outer helix is determined by the strength of the current in the winding K. The outer helix is controlled by a spring. In a modification the outer helix is connected with a hot wire through which current. is passed.
