Abstract
265,955. Brandt, E. W. Feb. 9, 1926, Projectile fuzes.- The firing pin is deformed on striking a screen between it and the percussion cap if the impact is weak, as when it occurs by accident, so that penetration of the percussion cap cannot then occur, whereas on impact at high speed, such as happens when the projectile strikes a target, no appreciable amount of deformation takes place, and the firing pin is able to penetrate and fire the percussion cap. In a modification, the blow of the impact may be transmitted to the deformable firing pin I<3>, Fig. 10, by air pressure from a plunger X. When this is driven in quickly, flap valves R close up and a strong pressure is transmitted to the firing pin; but a slow movement of the plunger, caused by a weak impact, is unable to close the valves R, and cannot therefore impart a sufficient blow to the firing pin. In another modification, Fig. 7, the firing pin I<2> is stayed by lateral masses S if the impact is strong; but, if the impact is weak, the masses S move sideways, and the firing pin collapses and fails to fire the percussion cap L<2>.
