Abstract

145,829. Vickers, Ltd., and Johnson, F. G. L. March 26, 1919. Projectile fuses.- Consists in a percussion fuse wherein a striker B with firing-pin b, which is released on discharge and is displaced axially in a forward direction by differential air pressure unopposed by spring pressure during flight, lies along the axis of the projectile in line with the detonator and is normally kept out of contact with the detonator by a safety device, such as centrifugal bolts C, C, which. when the striker moves forward. are released and allow the striker to be forced inwards on impact. The outward release of the centrifugal bolts is delayed by interengaging shoulders and recesses C' until the acceleration due to the discharge of the projectile from the gun is over. The striker is normally locked by a collar F in engagement with shoulders bx, b<0> on the striker and a shoulder e on a screwed sleeve E. On discharge. the collar sets back and its rebound is prevented by projecting points or a lip f<1>, which is deflected into a recess e<1> beneath the sleeve E. Air then gains access to the back of the striker past the edge f of the collar, which has been jagged by the shoulder bx on set-back. The striker is moved forwards by the air pressure behind it, until another shoulder b‹ on it is stopped by the edge f of the collar. The centrifugal bolts are now free to move out, and, after this, the striker is free to be forced in against the detonator when impact with the target occurs. The joints between the sleeve E, the collar F, and the striker B may be sealed with wax.
