Abstract
722,646. Projectile fuzes. ANSTALT FUR DIE ENTWICKLUNG VON ERFINDUNGEN UND GEWERBLICHEN ANWENDUNGEN ENERGA. Jan. 1, 1953 [Jan. 25, 1952], No. 75/53. Class 9(1). A hollow charge projectile has a nose fuze 1 in a cap and a body 3 containing a compound charge 4, 5 with a metal liner 6 in its cavity, a fin carrier 7 attached to the base 5a of the body being a housing for a detonator, which before firing is held in the inoperative position and after firing moves to the operative position near the apex of a liner for the cavity of the charge. The carrier 7 is provided with foldable fins as described in Specification 722,106. The rear of the projectile fits into a case 9 containing a primer carrier 10. Housed in the fin carrier 7 is a safety device 11 comprising a movable detonator 12 which is locked inside a housing 14 by balls 13 against the action of a spring 15. Rigidly attached to the detonator is the jacket 17 of a relay charge 16. The balls 13 are held against a bearing surface 18 of the jacket 17 by a locking ring 19 which sets back on firing against the action of a spring 20, thus freeing the balls 13. On set-back of the locking ring 19, an elastic ring 21 moves into a groove 22 to prevent return of the ring 19. An obturator 24 in the flash passage from the nose fuze 1 to the detonator is held during transport and handling by a ball 25 and a spring 26 which connects it with a valve 27, Fig. 4. On firing, simultaneously with the movement of the locking ring 19, the obturator 24 moves back compressing the spring 26 and allowing the ball 25 to escape into a seating 24a. When acceleration of the projectile ceases the detonator 12 moves forwardly due to inertia, while the obturator and valve 27 escape into the cavity of the hollow charge, thus freeing the flash passage from the fuze to the detonator. In a modification the detonator may be surrounded by an additional housing within the carrier 7. The relay charge 16 may be replaced by an inertia member held in place by balls. A flash passage is provided through the inertia member which has a relatively great wall thickness in proportion to its diameter, so that on premature ignition of the detonator the member is plastically deformed to block the flash passage and prevent the detonation spreading to the interior of the projectile.
