Abstract

1,060,228. Ammunition fuzes. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. Sept. 22, 1964 [Nov. 23, 1963], No. 38629/64. Heading F3A. Projectile fuze is provided with self-destruction means and comprises a two-part casing 1, 2 housing an axially movable firing pin 7 immobilized by a radially displaceable slide 10, Fig. 1, adjacent an insert 11 in which is an oblique channel 14 leading to an opening in the slide. Furthermore, within the channel is a movable element 15 restrained by a bolt 19 until centrifugal force brings about release of the bolt, whereupon the element moves along the channel and enters the slide causing unbalance thereof with resultant radial movement of the slide and release of the firing pin. The bolt 19 securing the element or ball 15 is initially held in position by a coiled spring metal band 18, the inner end of which is secured to a bush 17 surrounding the reduced end of the insert 11. When a rotated projectile equipped with the fuze is fired from a gun, centrifugal force causes the band 18 to expand and release the bolt 19, which is of low specific gravity, e.g. a plastics material. At the same time, due to centrifugal force, a spring band 21 expands and allows bolts 22, Fig. 2, locking the slide to move outwards and release the slide. Since the channel 14 runs obliquely, centrifugal force causes the ball 15 to move forwards and enter the bore 13 in the slide. The position of the centre of gravity of the slide then being altered, the slide moves radially and releases the pin 7, the fuze then being armed for direct action on impact. If impact does not occur before centrifugal force has fallen to a certain predetermined value, balls 5, which support a striker 4, move inwards so that a spring 6 can thrust the striker against the firing pin to operate the fuze.
